July 2026

Hello there. The last 24th ours have been epic. Through the lock and lakes too Baddek where field up, saw some friends from Rhodesia Island, got rain hats and scone and oatcakes. I think i might be repeating myself…

Any way we got of there and out into the Gulf of St Lawrence in good time. Larry had timed the tide just right. We motored some, sailed some, then sailed then motored until around 11 when the wind came up and it did in earnest. Blew a steady 26MPH all night with 35MPH gusts. Three reefs in the main and storm sail had Charlie surfing down waves at 10 knots on his shift. In case you don’t know, 10 knots is very fast in a sailboat like ours. Along with the wind came the waves, big swells accompanies us all the way across the “ chuck” the nick name for the water between Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Often just a mess of waves in varying directions. (See if you can determine the origin of the name Chuck) We are guessing waves as high as 9 feet. The boat and crew are performing just right. Although we haven’t seen land you it feels close. About 10 miles. We will run the east coast of Newfy for another day and a half to get to the next stop in Labrador.

See you next time
