GRIB

GRIB, get a new one, how old is the last one?. When we start the engine we can get the new GRIB files. How far out? 3 days. After that it’s useless.

What is a GRIB?- weather forecast., Using satellite models to predict the wind. Read weather buoys and other information. Algorithms. We get updates when we turn the motor on the charge the batteries; 4 hour intervals. GRIB- Gridded binary= compressed computer file used by meteorologists. 3D grid model od wind, temp, waves.

It gives the wind picture; our means of getting there. The GRIB files also helps us avoid excess wind.

That’s today’s conversation. It will not stop. We sailed all night last night. It’s wet. Larry and Charlie had a small whale surface at the bow then go under the boat.

The conversation evolves into fuel, diesel.

“I know exactly how many hours I can get out of this tank” think about it , is time trapped in the tank? Fuel turns to hours of time the engine runs. A gallon typically burns for an hour, yields about 6 miles.

There has been discussion of the volume of diesel onboard. Steve and one of the guys at Living Designs made a second tank for the boat before we left. 30 gallons. Here’s Larry calculating how much fuel is in the original tank.

Lots of sleeping, maybe better call it napping. Reading. Cribbage was played.

The Genneker went up for a few exciting moments around noon. The wind speed was a bit too much. We had a steep heal and the boat could not be steered in the chop we had. So down it went. Got warmed up moving around on deck and so forth setting and dousing that sail..

Grilled cheese for lunch…

This must be what it’s like in a small town on a slow news night. We are 300ish miles out of from Iceland. Charlie is recording sound, and I took a few pictures.

The settling on a destination a small harbor Reykjavik, has a bit of a narcotic effect, “What!? no problem to solve!?”

We decided on Hafnafjorour. No one’s first choice. It’s on the south side. We had planned on the north side but the wind dictates out comes. Too much up there, then too little. This area gives a chance to fill diesel and water tanks., showers, laundry.

We are discussing what’s for dinner 6 hours in advance.

Sound track Mark Knophler.
