ICE

Sorry, this post in late, tech issues

“Do you like ICE?” the 13 year old asked Charlie last night. He was out late, playing soccer with them, filming, getting to know each other. The conversation was about girls and LeBron and texting.

He said “No, they are not nice.” “What do you do about all the immigrants?” “We want ICE here” the boys said to get rid of the Muslims, “they are taking and taking from the government and raping the women.”

Late night window into the culture through teenage boys. Charlie has some video he will get out at some point.

Hearing words like this make us all think differently.

Ace (nickname for another new friend) late 30’s Viking re-enactor stopped by the boat after his 12 hour shift loaded tons of fish meal onto a ship.

He sat in the cockpit with us for an hour. Told us that there is nothing the US could do, nothing, that would change how Icelanders feel about us. “Why, I asked?” “Because you got us free from Denmark.”

We had geopolitics and history education and discussions.

We had a terrific bike ride around the island; into puffin land

The four of us on electric mountain bikes, riding around was a sight. Land-drunk balancing act. We made it out to the far end of the island where one of the largest puffin colony is. Burrows everywhere, buzzing like honey bees, swarming in the air, tucked against the bluffs where there burrows are.

We wandered around in awe, got down on the ground with them saw Razor Billed Auks.

With loudly squeaky brakes we made it down the steep hill and back to the main road. as we approached town, individual desires fragmented the group. I ended up a local craft store, Charlie went off? Larry’s and James went back to the boat.

The afternoon had us studiously watching what turned about to be the loading of a vessel with flush meal. This, a byproduct of an enormous fish growing and harvesting operation. Whatever is left after filleting the fish ends us as fish meal ground up to a dust-like powder. It was loaded into the hold of a cargo ship bound, in this case to Denmark, to be added into animal feed.

We lament ed leaving this place, but time to move on We had a dinner of salad from a local hip restaurant and Shwarma from the not so hip Shwarma place.

The heavy wind that was blasting the north of the Iceland is what made us steer into this harbor. We were blessed with good fortune that wind decided to do that.

To add to your epic tales, it looks like you’re in the path of the solar eclipse. Looking forward to that chapter!

What a journey you and your mates have been taking us on – the sailing, life on board, the destinations, the characters with their geopolitical perspectives, the whales in the ocean and on your plates, the Puffins. Awe inspiring.
